Job Title: Field Auditor
Department: Office of Counsel
Immediate Supervisor: Trust Account Compliance Program (TACP) Director

Purpose of the job: To ensure NC lawyers comply with the recordkeeping requirements for lawyer’s trust accounts as set forth in Rule 1.15 of the Rules of Professional Conduct.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Plan, coordinate, and conduct trust account compliance audits.
- With the IT department and TACP Director, develop a geographic plan for the year following the randomized report of all active lawyers in NC.
- Schedule audits each quarter following the geographic plan.
- Forward the information of the scheduled audits to the department assistant to prepare the audit packets, written notice, and subpoena in advance of each audit.
- Audit trust account(s) for compliance with the provisions contained in Rule 1.15.
- With the TACP director, determine appropriate corrective action when deficiencies are found.
- Provide education and educational materials on trust accounting to lawyers during audits as necessary.
- Prepare an Audit Report based on the findings of the audit.
- Review the Audit Report with the lawyer and provide guidance for corrective action(s) as needed.
- When necessary, direct lawyers to provide follow-up documentation substantiating that deficiencies have been corrected.
- Notify the TACP director when a lawyer is required to file follow-up documentation.
- If severe noncompliance or indications of misappropriation are found during an audit, confer with the TACP director as to the appropriate course of action including, as necessary, the preparation of a grievance referral.
- Prepare a report on the audit results each quarter for the council.
- File the quarterly report with applicable staff and committee chairs.
- Respond to trust account inquiries.
- Participate in the preparation and updating of educational materials on trust accounting.
Accountability and Authority
- The field auditor reports directly to the TACP director.
- The field auditor is accountable for the administration of the random audits.
Desired Education, Experience and Skills:
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related discipline preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of auditing, bookkeeping, or accounting experience (or a combination of) required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- A valid driver’s license, good driving record, and the ability to drive are required.
Working Conditions:
- Position is exempt in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act
- Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., one hour lunch break
- Overtime: as required unpaid
- Travel: required, statewide, expenses paid by the State Bar, car provided by the State Bar
Hiring Range: $55,000 - $70,000
