The Client Security Fund was established by the North Carolina Supreme Court in 1984 to reimburse clients who have suffered financial loss as the result of the dishonest conduct of lawyers engaged in the private practice of law in North Carolina. The fund is administered by a board of trustees called the Client Security Fund Board (“the Board”).

In recent months, the Board has received numerous claims for reimbursement from clients of disbarred attorney Jonathan W. Washburn due to Mr. Washburn’s allegedly dishonest or criminal conduct in reference to real estate closings handled by Mr. Washburn and/or the law firm Washburn Law, PLLC. The Board is also aware that there may be many other clients in North Carolina who would like to submit similar claims.

To fairly adjudicate such claims, the Board needs to consider all of the claims at one time.

Accordingly, the Board has established a deadline of December 31, 2025, for submission of all claims for reimbursement due to the actions of Jonathan W. Washburn and/or the Washburn Law Firm. Any claims for reimbursement submitted after this deadline will not be considered.

To submit a claim or to learn more about the Client Security Fund, please go to the fund’s website.

If you have any questions, you may contact the Board’s attorney, Danielle Marquis Elder, at PO Box 25908, Raleigh, NC 27611, (919) 828-4620, or via email.
