About Us

Understanding your legal rights and responsibilities can be challenging, especially when you're living in a new state.

Military service members and their families in North Carolina may encounter legal questions that depend on North Carolina law. While support is available through the legal assistance offices on military installations, those offices often rely on attorneys who are licensed in other states and may need additional guidance on North Carolina–specific issues.

The Legal Assistance for Military Personnel (LAMP) Committee of the North Carolina State Bar works to support both servicemembers and the attorneys who assist them. The committee develops practical resources to help servicemembers and their families better understand common legal issues, while also helping ensure that attorneys have access to North Carolina law and experienced practitioners when additional guidance is needed.

Through these efforts, LAMP aims to help prevent legal issues before they arise and to provide servicemembers and their families with clear, reliable information as they navigate legal matters during their time in North Carolina.

What We Do

LAMP works behind the scenes to support the attorneys who assist military personnel and their families. The committee helps connect military legal assistance attorneys with experienced North Carolina lawyers and provides access to North Carolina–specific legal resources.

This support allows military attorneys to more effectively address legal issues that arise under North Carolina law, which in turn helps servicemembers and their families receive informed and timely guidance on matters that affect them.

Resources for Servicemembers and Their Families

LAMP also develops practical, easy-to-understand materials designed specifically for servicemembers and their families. These resources are intended to help answer common legal questions and provide helpful information before speaking with an attorney.

Since 1983, LAMP has created and maintained a series of preventative law materials, including “TAKE-1" handouts" and “The Legal Eagle.” These resources are designed to:

  • help identify and prevent legal problems before they arise; and

  • provide clear, introductory information about common legal issues affecting military families.

These materials are a starting point and are meant to help individuals better understand their situation before seeking personalized legal advice.
