Job Title: Paralegal

Department: Office of Counsel (OOC)

Immediate Supervisor: Counsel and OOC Chief of Staff

Positions Supervised: None

Purpose of Job: To provide accurate, timely legal support to the Office of Counsel

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Take initiative to learn and understand the disciplinary process of the NC State Bar and self-regulation
  • Develop an understanding and knowledge of the Rules of Professional Conduct
  • Knowledge of court system and procedures, legal terminology, and civil procedure
  • Read, analyze, and summarize grievances and responses
  • Draft reports of counsel
  • Maintain electronic grievance files for assigned deputy counsel; keep files organized and updated
  • Maintain status of grievances in case management software
  • Prepare subpoenas and communicate with witnesses
  • Assist deputy counsel(s) to prepare for depositions and hearings by organizing case files, performing research, and gathering and organizing all evidence and materials to prepare exhibits
  • Assist deputy counsel(s) in drafting complaints and other pleadings to be filed with the Disciplinary Hearing Commission or other governmental agencies
  • Assist with administrative tasks and communications to include corresponding with lawyers, defendants, complainants, witnesses, and various court personnel including court reporters

Non-Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Legal research on WestLaw and the Administrative Office of the Courts – Criminal and Civil websites
  • Assist with research projects
  • Any other tasks as assigned

Desired Education, Experience, and Skills:

  • Associate’s degree; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Litigation paralegal experience preferred; paralegal certificate desired
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills along with excellent proofreading and formatting skills
  • Desire to work as part of a team
  • Ability to review many types of written material and summarize key information accurately and efficiently
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, work well under deadlines, and multi-task
  • Strong analytic skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills

Working Conditions:

  • Position is non-exempt in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act
  • Hybrid schedule possible after completion of initial probationary period
  • Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, one hour lunch break
  • Overtime: occasional, required most often during trials, paid or compensatory
  • Travel: Seldom

Hiring Range: $52,000 - $65,000
