Job Title: Director of Investigations 

North Carolina State Bar – Office of Counsel 

Location: Raleigh, NC  

Schedule: Full-Time, Exempt 

The North Carolina State Bar is seeking an experienced Director of Investigations to lead the Investigations Department within the Office of Counsel. This role oversees investigative operations, supervises staff investigators, ensures compliance with statutes and internal policies, and supports strategic planning for the department. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead and manage all investigative operations, including case assignments, evidence collection, interviews, audits, and case analysis. 

  • Ensure investigations are conducted in a timely, impartial, and legally sound manner consistent with applicable statutes, rules, and internal procedures.  

  • Review investigative reports for accuracy, completeness, and legal compliance. 

  • Supervise investigations related to insufficient funds notices (NSF) involving lawyer trust accounts. 

  • Oversee, mentor, and train staff investigators. 

  • Collaborate with Counsel on policy development and investigative procedures. 

  • Coordinate with legal staff, administration, IT, and external agencies to ensure efficient workflows and communication. 

  • Improve investigative processes, monitor workload trends, and uphold quality standards. 

  • Prepare reports and summaries for leadership and State Bar committees. 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree. 

  • 7+ years of experience in investigations, regulatory enforcement, compliance, legal practice, law enforcement, or related fields. 

  • Proven experience supervising investigative or professional staff. 

  • Strong analytical, communication, and decision‑making skills. 

  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion, neutrality, and professionalism. 

Working Conditions 

  • Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (one-hour lunch). 

  • Occasional unpaid overtime. 

  • Limited in‑state travel; mileage reimbursed. 

Hiring Range: $81,557.00 - $91,465.00
