Job Title: Managing Director of Specialization

Department: Board of Legal Specialization

Title of Immediate Supervisor: Director of Ethics & Special Programs

Positions Supervised: Certification Coordinator

Purpose of Job: To manage the promotion of specialization to lawyers and the public; to oversee the daily administration of the specialization program, and to provide administrative support to the director.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee the administration of the specialization program including: application process for initial certification and recertification; the work of the specialty committees; exam preparation and administration; and program marketing
  • Coordinate the activities of new and existing specialty committees as they prepare subject rubrics and study guide information, draft exam questions, organize pre-testing, determine cut score, and administer and grade examinations
  • Assist prospective specialty groups to prepare and submit applications to the board
  • Oversee use of Examsoft in compiling exams, banking exam questions, and administering exams
  • Work with psychometrician to guide specialty committees as they write and grade exams, and compile statistical data as needed by the board and/or psychometrician
  • Develop and implement exam manual and best practices for specialty committees
  • Conduct failing exam reviews and process requests for re-grades
  • Assist applicants and prospective applicants for certification, including waivers of strict compliance and accommodations
  • Administer scholarship program, including sources of funding and notifying applicants of decisions
  • Prepare annual reports concerning application and exam statistics
  • Develop and implement the marketing plan for specialization
  • Editor of The Specialist newsletter
  • Write specialization interview column for the Journal
  • Assist with preparation of annual budget
  • Provide advice and assistance to the Board of Legal Specialization; prepare board meeting agendas and minutes
  • Respond to and prepare correspondence as needed
  • Additional tasks as may be assigned by the board or the director of specialization

Non Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Attend functions for attorneys and the public to promote specialization

Accountability and Authority

The managing director of specialization is directly supervised by the director of ethics & special programs. The managing director of specialization is expected to exercise discretion in fulfilling the usual responsibilities of the job and to perform the job with minimal supervision.

Desired Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Working Conditions

  • Position is exempt in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act
  • Hours: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday, one hour for lunch break
  • Overtime: as required, unpaid
  • Travel: to annual retreat of Board of Legal Specialization and other board functions as needed

Hiring Range: $63,000 - $75,000
