Job Title: Litigation Paralegal
Department: Office of Counsel
Immediate Supervisor: Director of Operations for the Office of Counsel, Counsel and Deputy Counsel
Positions Supervised: None
Purpose of Job: To provide accurate, timely legal support to the Office of Counsel
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Take initiative to learn and understand the disciplinary process of the N.C State Bar and self-regulation
- Knowledge of court system and procedures, legal terminology, and civil procedureRead, analyze, and summarize grievances; draft substances of grievance
- Read, analyze, and summarize responses to letters of notice; draft reports of counsel
- Maintain grievance files for assigned deputy counsel; keep files organized and updated
- Develop an understanding and knowledge of the Rules of Professional Conduct
- Maintain status of grievances in case management software
- Answer complainant and respondent phone calls
- Initiate calls to respondents and summarize the conversation in the form of a written memo
- Prepare subpoenas
- Assist deputy counsel(s) to prepare for depositions and hearings by organizing case files, performing research, and gathering and organizing all evidence and materials to prepare exhibits
- Assist deputy counsel(s) in drafting complaints and other pleadings to be filed with the Disciplinary Hearing Commission or other governmental agencies
- Assist with administrative tasks and communications to include corresponding with lawyers, defendants, witnesses, and various court personnel including court reporters
Non-Essential Job Responsibilities
- Legal research on LexisAdvance and the Administrative Office of the Courts – Criminal and Civil websites
- Perform criminal record checks
- Assist with research projects
- Any other tasks as assigned
Accountability and Authority
The paralegal reports to and is directly supervised by the director of operations for the Office of Counsel, counsel, and deputy counsel. The paralegal is accountable for accurate and timely completion of all job responsibilities.
Desired Education, Experience, and Skills
- High School diploma; college degree preferred
- Litigation paralegal experience preferred; paralegal certificate desired
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills along with excellent proofreading and formatting skills
- Desire to work as part of a team
- Ability to review many types of written material and summarize key information accurately and efficiently
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, work well under deadlines, and multi-task
- Strong analytic skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills
Working Conditions:
- Position is non-exempt in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act
- Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, one hour lunch break
- Overtime: occasional, required most often during trials, paid or compensatory
- Travel: Seldom
